The Whisky Standard is an independent editorial portal dedicated to the history, craftsmanship and cultural heritage of whisky. We publish long-form writing on the distilleries, regions and production methods that have shaped the spirit over nine centuries.
We carry no advertising, no sponsored content and no commercial affiliations. Our work is written and edited in Britain by a small team of whisky historians.

The Art of Making Whisky
Whisky is made in a handful of unchanging steps: malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation, maturation, blending and bottling. Each stage is the accumulated inheritance of centuries.
Yet within that shared framework, every distillery makes its own decisions — the shape of a still, the length of the fermentation, the source of a cask — and the sum of those decisions is what gives each whisky its character.
